Recover secrets 🔑 from your paper backup 📝

TL;DR: This tool helps you recover your secrets from a paper backup in an emergency situation.

The recovery of your paper backup secrets is processed entirely on your device. No data is sent to kamiage.xyz or any other server. As an extra precaution, we recommend that you temporarily disconnect your device from the internet by turning off Wi-Fi or unplugging the ethernet cable to your device.

If you're technical, you can recover your secrets without using this website.

Alternative recovery method
  1. Follow Step 1 below to scan the QR code and save the QR contents to a file on your computer like paper-backup.age.
  2. Download age to your computer.
  3. Open a terminal and run: age --decrypt paper-backup.age
  4. Enter the passphrase for your paper backup when prompted.
  5. Your secrets will be printed to the terminal.

Step 1 - Scanning the QR code

Use your phone's camera to scan the QR code on your paper backup. The QR code contains the secrets you want to recover.

iPhone or iPad On iOS, it's best to use the Code Scanner from Control Center instead of the Camera app. The Code Scanner lets you copy the QR code contents to the clipboard instead of just searching for it.
Android On Android, the built-in camera app should let you copy the QR code contents to the clipboard.

Step 2 - Pasting the QR contents

Paste the contents of the QR code into the text area below. The contents should look like a long string of random characters (a mathematical representation of your secrets).

If there is an issue recovering your secrets, verify the QR contents matches the mathematical representation printed below the QR code on your paper backup.

Step 3 - Recovering your secrets

To recover your paper backup secrets, enter the passphrase written on the paper backup, then click Recover secrets.

Passphrase must be 10 words (lowercase) separated with hypens.

Step 4 - Your recovered secrets

Once your paper backup secrets are recovered, you should see them below.
